Justin Heekeren joins Maasmechelen on loan

Goalkeeper Justin Heekeren will play for Patro Eisden Maasmechelen for the remainder of the 2023/24 season. FC Schalke 04 have loaned the 23-year-old, who made his 2. Bundesliga debut this season, to the fourth-placed side in the Belgian second tier.

“Match practice is especially important for young goalkeepers,” said sporting director Marc Wilmots. “Because of the competition amongst our goalkeepers, we’ve found a solution together which will allow Justin to get more appearances under his belt before the summer. The experiences of the next few months will help further Justin’s development.”

Heekeren made his first steps in football in his hometown of Veen in the Rhineland. He appeared for the youth sides of Borussia Mönchengladbach and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen via VfB Homberg, eventually making his first-team debut for RWO. Since joining S04 in summer 2022, Heekeren has played 22 times in the Regionalliga West and twice in the 2. Bundesliga.
