Schalke 04 extend assistant coach Tim Hoogland’s contract

Tim Hoogland is staying at Schalke, with the club extending his contract as assistant coach by three years to 2029. The 40-year-old has been rewarded for the work he has done so far, including acting as an important link between the first team and the Knappenschmiede, as well as overseeing the Knappen’s set pieces. Hoogland joined the first-team coaching staff from the U19s in November 2024.

“I’m very grateful for the trust the club has shown in me and I’m delighted to continue my journey at Schalke. I really enjoy working with the team and all the staff – together, we set ourselves the goal of stepping things up by a couple of gears. We’ve done that and now we want to keep moving forward together,” said Tim Hoogland.

Head coach Miron Muslic added: “I’m really pleased that Tim Hoogland will remain an important part of our coaching team. We value his work highly – the team benefits enormously from his ideas and the way he goes about things. As a former player and someone who grew up in the area, he has a very good feel for the team, the club and the people here.”

Hoogland brought his playing career to an end in 2020 and took up his first coaching role at Schalke in March 2021 as assistant coach of the U17s. He moved up to the U19s in summer 2022. Last year, he successfully completed the UEFA Pro Licence course with the Football Association of Wales and has held the highest coaching qualification in European football ever since. Born in Marl, Hoogland joined the Knappenschmiede as a player in 1998, progressed through Schalke’s youth sides and made his senior debut in February 2005. He joined 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2007 before returning to Gelsenkirchen in 2010, where the right-back and defensive midfielder spent another four years with the Royal Blues – including one season on loan at VfB Stuttgart in 2012/13. He then went on to play for Fulham, VfL Bochum and Melbourne Victory.
