Jörn Menger appointed club’s new Head of Performance

A restructuring of the backroom staff at FC Schalke 04 means that Jörn Menger has taken on the role of Head of Performance with immediate effect. He will be responsible for fitness and treatment and will report directly to sporting director André Hechelmann.

“We have analysed the past few weeks and have come to the conclusion that we can improve our work being done towards fitness, injury prevention and rehabilitation,” said sporting director André Hechelmann. “Jörn Menger is a real expert, has all the right qualities and will now take over responsibility for physical performance. He’s also familiar with day-to-day life here at FC Schalke 04.”

Hechelmann added: “Our aim is to change how things work in these departments, gather information and then only have one contact person for the head coach regarding players’ workloads and injuries.”

Menger joined FC Schalke 04 in 2021 from VfL Bochum as the Head of Fitness. He has already decided to hire two new staff members ahead of the new season. Marc Thum, who worked on injury prevention and rehabilitation at Arminia Bielefeld and most recently in the Knappenschmiede, will do this within the first team with immediate effect. Another staff member in this field will complete the team on 1st August.
