Centre-back Tomáš Kalas joins FC Schalke 04

“In signing Tomáš, we have once again been able to strengthen our backline. We have been able to gain an experienced centre-back who will take on responsibility and be a leader on the pitch,” said sporting director André Hechelmann. “He will contribute to the competition within the squad and help us improve.” 

“Tomáš is quick and strong in the tackles, and brings a strong mentality with him. He is a strong defender and knows exactly when to time his movements. I’m looking forward to having him help stabilise our defence,” said head coach Thomas Reis. “We will now see how quickly it takes for him to be fully match-fit.” 

The 30-year-old is also looking forward to getting started, saying “After my spell at Bristol City ended, I knowingly took the time to consider where I could take the next step in my career and where I felt most comfortable. Schalke reaching out to me is a huge honour. I didn’t need long to consider the offer, and will now do everything possible to help the club get back to where they belong.” 

Kalas has enjoyed stints at several clubs in his career so far, including at Vitesse Arnheim in the Eredivisie, as well as Chelsea FC in the Premier League and Fulham FC and Bristol City in the Championship. The right-footed defender made his debut for the Czech Republic’s senior side in 2012 (31 caps), having featured for his country’s youth sides since U17 level.
