“There are no doubts that Kerim Calhanoglu has the potential to make the step up to the Bundesliga. The important thing is that he lays the foundations to do so and works hard towards that every day,” said head of sport Jochen Schneider. “Together with the academy we will support and nurture him carefully.”

Calhanoglu’s current coach Norbert Elgert is of a similar opinion. “Similarly to Sead Kolasinac or more recently Weston McKennie and Can Bozdogan, Kerim joined us in the U19s in order to make the next, perhaps decisive step up to professional football. Kerim is a talented player with a lot of potential and a great personality. I’m very pleased for him.”

The Germany youth international joined the Royal Blues in summer 2020 from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The defender, who has also played on the left of midfield, captained the U19s in their only game this season in a 1-0 victory. In total, the 18-year-old has played 22 times at U19 level and 33 U17 games.
