After a successful medical, the 20-year-old (born 21st October 1997 in Casablanca) signed a five year deal with Schalke until 30th June 2023. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose the details of the transfer.

“We have been monitoring Hamza for a while now and are very happy to have closed the deal. He provides exactly what we want from a left back – athleticism, dynamism, solidity and attacking impetus. We are hugely excited to elevate this great talent to the next level”, said Domenico Tedesco about the new signing, who has made 13 Ligue 1 appearances. Mendyl has also featured in three cup games for OSC Lille, whose youth academy plucked him from the Academie Mohammed VI in Morocco in the summer of 2016.

“I’m delighted to have signed for such a big club”, said Mendyl. “With Domenico Tedesco, I’ve got a coach who is renowned for improving players. He showed that clearly last year. I want to keep developing under him and help Schalke lead great campaigns in all three competitions this season.”

Mendyl has 13 caps for Morocco to his name and travelled to the World Cup in Russia with fellow compatriot and Schalke teammate Amine Harit.
