Goalkeeper Luca Podlech agrees contract extension with Schalke 04
FC Schalke 04 have agreed a contract extension with goalkeeper and Gelsenkirchen native, Luca Podlech. The 19-year-old has been with the Royal Blues since summer 2016 and has been training with the club’s first team since summer 2024. He has now put pen to paper on a new contract until 30th June 2028.
“We see a lot of potential in Luca, which is why we’re delighted to have agreed on a long-term contract extension with him. Luca is a hard worker and extremely motivated, while his roots in Gelsenkirchen mean that he identifies fully with Schalke 04. At 2 metres tall, his height is perfect for a goalkeeper. We want to continue to help him develop here. Part of that includes gathering match practice with our U23s, which is why Luca will take part in pre-season training with Jakob Fimpel’s team,” said Youri Mulder, S04’s director of professional football.
We discussed what my next steps will be. I want to learn and continue to improve.
“I would like to thank all those involved for the trust they have shown in me. My motivation is to continue giving my best in training and in every game. We discussed what my next steps will be. I want to learn and continue to improve,” said Podlech. “Schalke 04 are my club. I’ve always been a fan and regularly attended matches. I’m extremely delighted to be remaining part of this club.”
Podlech joined the Royal Blues eight and a half years ago from SV Leithe 19/65. He was part of the Schalke U17 side that won the U17 Bundesliga in 2021/22. In 2024/25, Podlech has featured nine times for the club’s U23s in the Regionalliga West.
