“The financial aspect of this offer meant that in our current situation, we had to accept,” explains director of sport Rouven Schröder. “Matthew is a brilliant young player, but he would have found it tough to obtain the regular starting place in this team in the next few weeks that he wants. We wish him all the best for his personal and sporting future.”

Matthew Hoppe transferred to Schalke’s U19 side from the Barcelona Academy in July 2019. He made his Bundesliga debut away to Gladbach in November 2020 aged just 19 and scored a hat-trick against Hoffenheim just two months later to open his account in the top flight. Overall, Hoppe made 22 Bundesliga appearances and scored six goals, and the 2021 Gold Cup champion has made one substitute appearance this season.
