Michael Langer remains at S04 in a new role
Michael Langer’s career with FC Schalke 04 is set to continue after his retirement as a player. The former goalkeeper will undertake a trainee programme in sport management until the end of the 2025/26 season. This follows on from his sport management studies, which the 40-year-old completed in November 2024, during the final season of his playing career.
In his role in management, Langer will be involved in the familiar environment of the men’s first team, as well as the women’s side and the Knappenschmiede. He won’t only gain a deep insight in areas like scouting and data analysis, but also take on responsibility for various projects.
For the duration of his involvement at Schalke, he will report to Frank Baumann, who, as board member for sport at S04, will be the first port of call for the former shot-stopper. In order to broaden his horizons beyond working at the Royal Blues, the 40-year-old will also gain experience at other companies in the coming months.
Langer has been part of the Schalke family since 2017, when he arrived in Gelsenkirchen from Swedish side IFK Norrköping. In his role as backup keeper until hanging up his boots in the summer of 2025, he made eight appearances for S04 and unfailingly performed at his best. Just as importantly, Langer played a vital part through working with younger goalkeepers in training, as well as on the bench, in the dressing room and as a member of the team council.
