Miron Muslic appointed as FC Schalke 04’s new head coach
FC Schalke 04 have made a key decision for the club’s future, appointing Miron Muslic as their new head coach following an extensive and carefully considered selection process. The 42-year-old arrives from English Championship club Plymouth Argyle. Both clubs have agreed not to disclose the details of the transfer. Muslic, an Austrian national, has signed a contract with the Royal Blues running until 30th June 2027.
“We started by creating a clear profile of what we were looking for, and then carried out a detailed search as a team. In Miron Muslic, we’ve found the coach we wanted for FC Schalke 04. We are convinced he is the right man for this situation. We’re delighted to welcome Miron to Schalke,” said Frank Baumann, who will officially take over as board member for sport on 1st June.
“Miron impressed us with both his expertise and his communication skills. He knows how to inspire a group, and his style of coaching is clearly recognisable both on and off the pitch. His leadership and resilience were key aspects of our discussions. With his strengths, he can help the team as a whole, as well as support the individual development of our players. We’re confident that, with our backing, he’ll be successful as head coach of Schalke 04,” Baumann added.

Director of professional football Youri Mulder is also looking forward to working with the 42-year-old: “Miron made a very strong impression in our conversations. Naturally, as head coach, he will be my main point of contact in the performance centre. We view a high-performance culture as the foundation of our work with the squad, the coaching team and support staff. Miron will embody that approach and make it a central part of his day-to-day work at Schalke.”
“My thanks go first to Plymouth Argyle, who made it possible for me to hold talks with FC Schalke 04,” said Muslic. “I’m also very grateful to all those at Schalke for placing their trust in me. From the very first contact, we had open and honest discussions. Together with Frank Baumann, Youri Mulder, Ben Manga and Matthias Tillmann, we discussed in detail what Schalke are looking for and how I can contribute. We’re determined to put that plan into action, and I’m ready to get to work with full conviction and passion.”
In the 2022/23 season, after taking over as head coach of Cercle Brugge, the UEFA Pro Licence holder led the team from second-bottom to eighth place, qualifying for the Belgian league’s UEFA Conference League play-offs. In his second season in 2023/24, he guided Cercle to a remarkable fifth-place finish in the regular season. They then finished fourth in the championship round, securing a place in UEFA Europa League qualifying. Cercle Brugge went on to reach the group stage of the UEFA Conference League.
In January 2025, English Championship side Plymouth Argyle appointed Muslic as head coach, replacing Wayne Rooney, who had been dismissed with the team bottom of the table on just 20 points from 25 games. Muslic remained unbeaten in 12 of the 21 remaining fixtures. In the end, Plymouth fell just three points short of avoiding relegation. A highlight of his tenure came in early February 2025, when he guided Plymouth to a sensational FA Cup fourth-round win over Liverpool FC.
As a player, Muslic spent his career in Austria. He made four Bundesliga appearances for SV Ried and played 57 matches in the second division for SV Wörgl.
