Niklas Tauer becomes S04’s first January signing

The Royal Blues have completed their first transfer of the January window, securing Niklas Tauer on a one-and-a-half-year loan deal from 1. FSV Mainz 05. The transfer details are undisclosed.

“Niklas ticks all the boxes for the kind of player we were looking for: someone who knows the Bundesliga, who won’t need long to settle in and who is versatile,” said Peter Knäbel, board member for sport. “We’re confident that his mentality makes him a perfect fit for our club and that he will be able to show his real potential here.”

Head coach Thomas Reis added: “Niklas is a very dynamic player and tough-tackler and will be a good addition with his quality on the ball too. I picture him more as a holding midfielder, but he can also play at centre- or right-back. I’m looking forward to getting to work with him on the pitch.”

The defensive all-rounder is excited for the challenge ahead: “I’m fired up to work with the team towards our goal of staying up. Having played at Schalke a few weeks ago, I know what kind of energy the fans and the team can produce when they come together. We will need that spark for our remaining games this season.”

Born in Mainz, Tauer has played for FSV since he was eleven years old. He came through the ranks to become a Germany youth international too, playing for his country at U18, U19 and U20 level.
