Omar Mascarell to continue as captain

A few days ahead of the 2020/21 season, David Wagner confirmed that Omar Mascarell will remain captain of Schalke 04. The Spaniard first took the armband in the second half of last season.

“During the difficult times, Omar fulfilled his role as captain of the team very well. Even when he was injured, he – along with Benji Stambouli – was still an important voice for the team and coaching staff,” said Wagner on his decision, which he relayed to the team on Thursday (10/09).

Mascarell’s deputies will be Benjamin Stambouli, who was also vice-captain last season, and Bastian Oczipka. “In addition to Omar, we have other players in the team who want and should take responsibility. Among those are Benji and Basti. All three of these players were, and are, looked up to by the team, regardless of their captaincy role,” said Wagner. “Our situation has changed in comparison to the majority of the Rückrunde. Thanks to the return of some players who were injured or loaned-out, as well as the signing of Vedad Ibisevic, we have a lot more experience and therefore stability in the team.”

The trio will make up the team council alongside two other players who will be chosen in the coming weeks.
