Omar Mascarell named new FC Schalke 04 captain
The Royal Blues have a new captain. Omar Mascarell has taken over the responsibility from Alexander Nübel and will lead the team out onto the pitch henceforth. "We have mutually agreed that Alex will step down from his role as captain," said David Wagner. Nübel will move to Bayern at the end of the current season, as announced on 4 January 2020 by the record champions.
“We looked at all the pros and cons and decided that it’s better for the team if he gives up the armband. This way we avoid constant unrest,” Wagner explained. The team was informed of the decision ahead of the first training session at the camp in Fuente Alamo.
The head coach also stressed that “Alex remains an important member of the group. We need to continue to completely support every player,” because one thing is certain: “In the coming months, there are bigger things to think about than this. It cannot be that one player is put under the spotlight.”
Benjamin Stambouli will continue to act as vice-captain, with Daniel Caligiuri now also one of Mascarell’s deputies. The German-Italian has already been a member of the team council.
