Peter Hermann joins Royal Blue coaching staff

Peter Hermann will join FC Schalke 04 as an assistant coach to interim head coach Mike Büskens, alongside Matthias Kreutzer and Simon Henzler. The 70-year-old will return to Schalke for a second stint, having previously spent 2013 to 2014 at the club as assistant to Jens Keller.

“We are very happy that Peter Hermann will be joining our coaching staff. His experience and his vast qualifications will greatly enrich our staff. He was once a player himself, and has since gone on to amass 30 years of experience as an assistant coach at the top level and has experienced many different situations. We are convinced that he will be able to give us new energy heading into this key phase of the season,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder.

Mike Büskens is looking forward to working with Hermann, saying “When I was asked to take over as head coach for the final nine games, I knew immediately that we needed to bring in someone new, as we couldn’t take Tim Hoogland away from the U17s forever. I know Peter and our paths have crossed many times over the last 20 years. It was the logical decision for me to approach him. I’m very happy that our efforts have now been successful. I’m looking forward to working with him and am confident that we will form a strong team, together with Matthias Kreutzer and Simon Henzler.”

Left with a good feeling

Hermann also has a clear plan in mind for the upcoming weeks. “The discussions with the club left me with a very good feeling. Schalke have undergone a focused development over the last months and taken several important steps forward. That’s what made it possible for me to imagine myself returning to the club. Together with the coaching staff, I want to get the best out of the team in order to be able to pick up as many points as possible from the remaining matches.”

Most recently, Hermann was an assistant coach with the Germany U20s. Meikel Schönweitz, head coach of Germany’s youth sides, had this to say about Hermann’s temporary change in position: “Peter does his job with a lot of passion. He indicated that he would like to stay with us for another year after this summer. At the same time, he wanted to help FC Schalke 04 over the next couple of months. We did not want to prevent him from doing so, and have granted Peter’s wish, following a discussion with Rouven Schröder.”

Prior to his time at the DFB, Hermann worked for Bundesliga clubs Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern München, where he was employed from 2011 to 2013 and 2017 to 2019. He featured for teams such as Leverkusen and Hamburger SV during his active playing career.
