Rainer Widmayer joins the coaching team

Rainer Widmayer has joined FC Schalke 04 on a contract running until the end of the season as an assistant to new head coach Christian Gross.

“Rainer Widmayer will strengthen our coaching team perfectly with his experience and skills. He was a professional footballer himself and has now been a successful assistant coach in the Bundesliga for over 10 years, also overcoming a number of difficult sporting situations. This combination will help to improve us,” commented Jochen Schneider, Head of Sport and Communication.

Born in Sindelfinger, Widmayer’s most recent position was the same role at VfB Stuttgart. Before that, he was assistant coach at Hertha BSC for five seasons as well as at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for one year. He also had two previous spells at Stuttgart. Other clubs on Widmayer’s CV include Swiss clubs FC St. Gallen and Grasshoppers. As a player, Widmayer played for a number of clubs including SpVgg Ludwigsburg and SSV Ulm 1846.
