Schalke 04’s release list announced at the end of the season

The challenging 2023/24 season will come to an end on Sunday (19/5) with the trip to play SpVgg Greuther Fürth. After Simon Terodde and Danny Latza bid farewell to the fans after the final home game against Hansa Rostock last weekend, more decisions have been made on the future of the squad.

The club will not be extending the contracts of Cedric Brunner, Blendi Idrizi, Thomas Ouwejan and Steven van der Sloot. “We would like to thank all of them for their time and hard work here at Schalke. Saying goodbye to players is part of this period of the season. We wanted to be honest with the players before their summer break and let them know that their time at S04 is over. We wish them all the best for the future,” said Marc Wilmots on behalf of the club’s sporting management.

Blendi Idrizi and Thomas Ouwejan won promotion to the Bundesliga with the club in 2022. During his time at S04, Idrizi became a Kosovo international and appeared 42 times for Schalke’s first team. Ouwejan has played 77 games during his three years in Gelsenkirchen, scoring five goals and recording 16 assists, forming a fine partnership with striker Simon Terodde during the aforementioned promotion campaign.

Right-back Cedric Brunner played 47 times for the Royal Blues during his two-year spell with the club. U23s full-back Steven van der Sloot has also not received a new contract. He has trained with the first team for large parts of this season and recorded six appearances.

Michael Langer’s contract will also not be renewed as things stand. The goalkeeper joined FC Schalke 04 in 2017 from IFK Norrköping and played eight times in all competitions for the club, including on three occasions this season. The Austrian has been “an important factor” in training sessions, on the bench and away from the pitch, providing a loud voice when needed.
