S04 extend Bastian Oczipka's contract

A permanent fixture of David Wagner’s Schalke team has committed his future to the club. Bastian Oczipka has agreed a three-year contract extension with the Royal Blues, keeping him at FC Schalke 04 until 30th June 2023. The left-back, who was played every second of the 20 competitive games so far this season, joined S04 from Eintracht Frankfurt in summer 2017.

“Basti has constantly played at a high level this season. He’s not just an established Bundesliga left-back, of which there aren’t many, but he is also a stand-up guy. I’m delighted that he will carry on being a part of this team,” said David Wagner.

“Basti is a staple of this team and played a crucial role in helping us regain stability with his performances at left-back in the first half of the season. It was no different in the three games he played as centre-back either,” said sporting director Jochen Schneider. “He is a real team player. We’re thrilled that he sees his future at Schalke.“

“It didn’t take me long after my move from Frankfurt to feel a connection to this club; I was hooked almost immediately,” said Oczipka. “I’m over the moon that I will be able to be a part of FC Schalke 04 beyond this season. We have a great team that has by no means reached the end of its development,” added the 31-year-old. “I’m fully motivated to press on with the work we did in the first half of the season.” Bastian Oczipka has made a total of 78 competitive appearances in his two and a half years in Gelsenkirchen, scoring one goal.
