S04 extend contract with Weston McKennie until 2024

Head of Sport Jochen Schneider today announced that Weston McKennie’s contract has been extended until 2024. McKennie’s contract was due to expire at the end of the 2021/22 season.

“The decision was very easy for me, because I’ve constantly been able to enjoy the unbelievable support of our fans. The board have likewise always stood behind me. I’m looking forward to what the future holds,” said McKennie in a video played at the members’ conference to Royal Blue fans. The 20-year-old is currently in America taking part in the Gold Cup with the USA national team. McKennie and his side play Curacao in the quarter-finals this evening.

McKennie joined the Royal Blues from the FC Dallas Academy in 2016, playing for the Schalke U19s and soon after making his first-team debut. The 20-year-old has since made 47 first-team appearances in the Bundesliga, scoring once. McKennie has also played six times in the DFB-Pokal and six times in the Champions League. The USA international scored his first and only goal in European competition against Lokomotiv in this year’s edition of the competition.
