Domenico Tedesco’s team will open the Kaliningrad Stadium, a host venue for the World Cup in Russia this summer. The match came about at the discretion of Schalke’s main sponsor GAZPROM.

The stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000, will host four group matches at the 2018 World Cup, the first of which will be between Croatia and Nigeria on 16th June. Serbia vs. Switzerland (22nd June), Spain vs. Morocco (25th June) and England vs. Belgium (28th June) will follow.

FK Baltika Kaliningrad, from the region formerly named Königsberg, are currently in sixth place of the “first division” of Russia’s second tier after 25 matchdays. The Blue-Whites’ greatest achievement is winning the second league title in 1995, a season which was followed with three years in the Russian top flight.
