“Dominick is just the player we were looking for to strengthen our attacking midfield,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “He is a very intelligent player both on and off the ball, he’s incredibly creative and he is good at dribbling out of tight areas. The fact he has been involved in 55 goals in 97 second-division appearances underlines how valuable he can be for this team.”

“When Schalke 04 reached out to me, I didn’t have to think about it for long,” explained Drexler. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the team as quickly as possible and perhaps already being part of the squad on Friday against HSV.”

The right-footed, Bonn-born playmaker spent the past three seasons with 1. FC Köln, recording 17 goals and 27 assists in 95 competitive appearances for the Billy Goats. Drexler’s most successful spell came with Holstein Kiel, where he scored 21 times and set up a further 26 goals in 71 games. He narrowly missed out on Bundesliga promotion with the northern club in summer 2018, losing in the relegation play-off to VfL Wolfsburg.
