“Alexander is an experienced goalkeeper that will provide our team with some stability. He’s shown his quality at all his previous clubs,” said Rouven Schröder. “We are confident that he will improve our goalkeeping team and that he can contribute to us achieving our targets next season.”

One thing in particular impressed the sporting director during the negotiations: “Alex is happy to give up a lot of money to move to Schalke. He made it clear to us that playing football is his absolute priority.”

Head coach Frank Kramer is also delighted with the deal: “We all agreed that Alexander had all the qualities a number one goalkeeper needs when we spoke about this position. He will fit in well to the club and the team.”

Schwolow raring to go

“I’m really pleased that the deal is done and I will be at Schalke ready for pre-season. I’m aware of the challenges ahead of us – it will be a tough time and I’m ready to get stuck in together with my new teammates,” said Schwolow.

The 1.90m tall goalkeeper has played 176 times in the Bundesliga and 33 times in the second division to date. He spent the majority of his career at SC Freiburg, having joined them aged 16 from SV Wehen Wiesbaden in summer 2008. Following two seasons in their academy, Schwolow moved up to their U23s, before signing his first professional contract in January 2012.

Schwolow spent 2014/15 on loan at Arminia Bielefeld and played a big part in their 3. Liga winning campaign, in which they also reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal. He has been on the books at Hertha BSC since summer 2020.
