First training session of the year includes Adrian Gantenbein and Zaid Tchibara

The Schalke first team have returned to the training pitch for their first session of the new calendar year this Saturday (03/01). Head coach Miron Muslic’s squad were present for internal performance diagnostics the day prior, at which important data was collected regarding player’s individual training plans. Adrian Gantenbein made up part of the group, returning to team training for the start of 2026.

Zaid Tchibara, who also completed performance diagnostics, will be fully involved again on the pitch. Johannes Siebeking can also take part in team training once more.

Anton Donkor took part in the performance diagnostics as well but will initially be training individually. Meanwhile, Justin Heekeren will be continuing with his recovery programme at the athletic centre. Christopher Antwi-Adjei (Achilles), Bryan Lasme (knee), Max Grüger and Janik Bachmann (both: foot) will all be working individually after sustaining injuries just prior to the season’s midway point. Ayman Gulasi will continue his rehabilitation work following a successful operation on his ACL in December. Paul Pöpperl is sidelined with flu. Peter Remmert will initially take part in team training with the U23 side from Monday (05/01) after a lengthy injury kept him out of the first half of the season.

The week of training in the lead-up to the friendly match at 14:00 CET on Saturday away to third-tier side VfL Osnabrück (10/01) begins on Tuesday (06/01). At that stage, club captain Kenan Karaman, along with Vitalie Becker, Soufiane El-Faouzi, Loris Karius, Nikola Katic, Hasan Kuruçay, Ron Schallenberg and Moussa Sylla, will return. Due to their increased workload so far this season, each of these eight players received an extended break.
