Trio absent from training at the start of the week

FC Schalke 04 resumed training on Monday (20/1) ahead of next weekend’s match against 1. FC Nürnberg (25/1). Head coach Kees van Wonderen was without Derry John Murkin, Emil Højlund and Justin Heekeren for the afternoon session.

Murkin had picked up an injury to his left ankle in the closing stages of last weekend’s game in Braunschweig (18/1). On Monday, a closer examination was able to rule out any serious injury to the defender, who will not take part in training over the coming days. Højlund, meanwhile, will be sidelined for several weeks after picking up a thigh muscle injury during last Friday’s final training session (17/1). Heekeren did not train on Monday due to a cold.

Aris Bayindir, Christopher Antwi-Adjei, Janik Bachmann and Amin Younes all trained individually on Monday. The latter two had both undergone minor procedures on their knees towards the end of the first half of the season.
