The midfielder has completed his medical in Gelsenkirchen and signed a contract until 30th June 2022. Serdar is the third new signing for the 2018/19 season, after forward Mark Uth (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) and versatile defender Salif Sané (Hannover 96) already agreed to deals.

“Suat is a young, ambitious player with a wealth of potential. He will get all the time he needs here to develop into a good Bundesliga player,” says Christian Heidel, who knows Serdar’s abilities better than anyone thanks to the time he spent in Mainz. Why? Serdar signed his first professional contract in August 2015, when Heidel was still the sporting director of the Zerofivers.

“We’re really happy that we were able to convince Suat to a be a part of what we’re trying to achieve, “ explains Schalke head coach, Domenico Tedesco. “He is a very talented player that has already put his qualities on full display in the Bundesliga – in our opinion he hasn’t even reached his full potential yet, though.”

We're extremely happy to have Suat on board.

It’s a really exciting move for me,“ says Serdar. “There were other options on the table, but it wasn’t hard to decide to move to Schalke. The negotiations went really well with the management, the stadium is the most attractive in Germany and the fans are unreal,” continues the 21-year-old. “So I’m really happy that everything has worked itself out.”

After he made his first few footballing steps at home town club Hassia Bingen, Serdar moved to the Mainz academy when he was eleven years old in 2008. The right-footed midfielder then played in every one of the Zerofivers’ youth teams and has been a part of the Germany youth setup at his age since the Under-16s. He took part in the Under-20 World Cup with Germany in South Korea last year and played in every one of their games. He’s made a total of 33 appearances for Germany youth teams and has scored five goals. Serdar has been a part of the Germany Under-21 setup since September 2017.

The midfielder has played 45 Bundesliga games to this point in his career, scoring two goals. He has also played in five DFB-Pokal games (1 goal) and four Europa league games.
