Thomas Ouwejan is staying at Schalke!
FC Schalke 04 have signed Thomas Ouwejan on a permanent deal. The Dutch full-back has put pen to paper a contract running until the end of the 2023/24 season. The 25-year-old joined the Royal Blues on loan from AZ Alkmaar last summer and will become a permanent member of the squad from 1st July 2022.
“Thomas has constantly shown this season why we were so desperate to sign him last summer. He’s one of the best wide players in the second division and is really dangerous from set pieces,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “We’re really pleased that Thomas is staying with us and that he will play for us in the Bundesliga too.”
I feel really happy here at the club and in the city, it’s a great fit for me.
“I always said that my dream was to get promoted to the Bundesliga with Schalke. It’s amazing that we’ve achieved this goal,” explained Ouwejan. “I feel really happy here at the club and in the city, it’s a great fit for me. I’m therefore really looking forward to getting stuck into next season after the short break.”
The Dutch defender came through AZ Alkmaar’s academy, breaking into the first team in 2015. He played 81 times overall in the Eredivisie, scoring two goals and registering 12 assists. He also featured 10 times in the Europa League. Ouwejan has made 29 appearances so far for S04, finding the net three times and setting up a further eight goals.
