Tim Hoogland joins first-team coaching staff
Knappenschmiede assistant coach Tim Hoogland has been promoted to the same role in FC Schalke 04’s first team until further notice.
The 39-year-old had worked alongside the U19s head coach until now. “Bringing Tim on board provides us with a highly qualified coach who knows the club inside-out from his time here as a player and as a youth coach,” said Ben Manga, director of squad planning, scouting and the Knappenschmiede. “We would like to thank Norbert Elgert, who immediately gave the green light for Tim to join the first-team setup.”
“After Peter Balette had to step away from the coaching team due to personal reasons, we have now found a very good solution, something that our conversations with Tim have convinced me of. I’m looking forward to working with him. His experience at the club will benefit us as a team,” said head coach Kees van Wonderen.

“Hoogi is Schalke through and through. He is incredibly skilled, as well as being an upstanding and loyal person,” said U19s head coach Norbert Elgert. “I believe that he will make the coaching team stronger.”
After retiring from playing in 2020, Hoogland began his coaching career in March 2021 as an assistant for the Schalke U17s. The UEFA A-Licence holder then took the step up to the U19 team in summer 2022. Hoogland is currently working simultaneously at the Football Association of Wales to gain his Pro Licence. Born in Marl, 15 kilometres outside of Gelsenkirchen, Hoogland joined the Knappenschmiede as a 13-year-old in 1998, working his way through the youth teams, before making his professional debut for the Royal Blues in February 2005. The right-back and defensive midfielder made the switch to 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2007, but returned to S04 in 2010 for another four seasons, one of which he spent on loan at VfB Stuttgart (2012/13). After leaving Schalke again, he had spells at FC Fulham and VfL Bochum, before finishing his career at Melbourne Victory.
