Tim Smolders appointed assistant coach at FC Schalke 04

FC Schalke 04 have announced the appointment of Tim Smolders as assistant to Karel Geraerts, one day after the new head coach took up his new position at the club. The Belgians already worked together successfully at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

“We’re thrilled that Tim is now a part of the coaching team. His history working alongside Karel is a real plus. Having played professionally and also worked as a youth coordinator at Brugge, Tim has valuable experience that fits in very well at Schalke,” said sporting director André Hechelmann.

“Tim has many qualities, including an extensive knowledge of the game. He is a very open person and has a mentality that makes him a perfect fit at the team and the club,” explained head coach Karel Geraerts.

The 43-year-old made over 400 appearances in the Belgian and Dutch top flight during his playing career, including spells at Club Brugge, RBC Roosendaal, RSC Charleroi, KAA Gent and Cercle Brugge. The central midfielder also played three times in the Champions League and featured in a total of 15 UEFA Cup and Europa League games.

After hanging up his boots, Smolders began his coaching career as an assistant for the Belgium U19s. He then held the same role at Club Brugge’s U21 side, before becoming head of the club’s youth setup.
