“We are pleased that Timo Becker is staying at the club. He showed last season that he is capable of playing in the Bundesliga. We’re happy that he will continue to develop with us next season,” said Head of Sport Jochen Schneider.

Timo Becker was also happy with his new contract: “I have always dreamt of signing a professional contract at Schalke. I’m really proud that it’s now come to fruition. Today is one of the best days of my life so far.”

The 23-year-old defender joined Schalke U23s from Rot-Weiss Essen last summer and worked his way into the first team, going on to make ten Bundesliga appearances. He also played 16 times in the Regionalliga West (fourth tier), scoring three goals.

Becker’s new contract at Schalke is something special for him. The defender, who can play anywhere across the back four, joined the Knappenschmiede from SSV Buer aged ten. After six years with the Royal Blues, he moved to Rot-Weiss Essen’s U17s. After featuring for their U19s, he moved up to their Regionalliga side in 2016. Becker, a lifelong Schalke fan, then returned to Gelsenkirchen after three seasons in Essen.
