Two new assistant coaches for David Wagner – Improve the team

Wagner has already worked with Bühler; in the U19s and U17s teams of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2007-10), at Borussia Dortmund II (2013-15) and at Huddersfield Town (2015-18). Frank Föhling was a coach in the TSG 1899 Hoffenheim youth teams between 2007-13 and was the assistant coach of Markus Gisdol. Fröhling followed Gisdol to HSV where they worked from 2016 to 2018.

Riether becomes the first team coordinator

Sascha Riether has taken up an important role within the team. The 36-year-old, who retired from playing professional football at the end of the season, has become the coordinator between the first team, the coaching team and the board. Gerald Asamoah, who was a temporary team manager, will take back control of the U23s. Mike Büskens will continue to be involved in Schalke in the future as talks are currently underway with sporting director Jochen Schneider.

Schalke 04 and Axel Schuster have parted ways. René Grotus will take over responsibilities of the current senior director of football. René had joined Schalke together with Christian Heidel in 2016 from Mainz 05. The 34-year-old comes from RB Leipzig, where he has worked well with Schneider in the past. Grotus has also worked before at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Michael Reschke was appointed as the new technical director a few weeks ago.

The coaching team has also been reinforced by sports psychologists Sascha Lense (from Dynamo Dresden) and Massimo Mariotti. They will be in charge of assisting new signings adapt to their new surroundings, among other things. The Swiss worked in a similar position for VfB Stuttgart.
