Victor Pálsson signs for D.C. United
Promotion winner Victor Pálsson has left FC Schalke 04 to join D.C. United with immediate effect. The Iceland international has signed a long-term contract with the MLS side. Both parties have agreed not to disclose further details about the transfer.
“It was not an easy decision for either side. Victor was valuable for us, and not only on the pitch. He was also a role model for his teammates with how he carried himself off the field. His focus on the success of the team and his desire to achieve common goals set him apart. He was also an important point of contact, especially for the younger and the foreign players,” explained Rouven Schröder.
Victor Pálsson’s family situation also played a part in the transfer: “Victor’s family lives in North America and he received a long-term contact from an MLS club. This package simply suits him. We wish Victor nothing but the best for his private and sporting futures,” continued Schröder.

The Iceland international also has mixed emotions as he leaves the club: “It is really hard for me to leave the club and to leave my teammates. Private concerns were the deciding factor for me in the end, as my family lives in North America. My year at Schalke was one of the most emotional of my career. The road to promotion, the games against Sandhausen and St.Pauli – these are moments I will never forget. I wish Schalke 04 all the best for the new season and I am convinced that the team and the staff will stay in the division.”
Pálsson moved to Gelsenkirchen from SV Darmstadt in the summer of 2021. The central-midfielder made 28 2. Bundesliga appearances for Schalke last season, making three assists in the process. He also played twice in the DFB-Pokal. The 31-year old was also a member of the team council and was Schalke’s vice-captain.
