S04 travel to Albufeira for training camp with 31 players
FC Schalke 04’s first-team squad is en route to their winter training camp in the Algarve. Head coach Karel Geraerts’ side will spend nine days preparing for the second half of the season in the 2. Bundesliga in the Portuguese city of Albufeira. A total of 31 players were onboard the plane heading from Düsseldorf towards Faro at 10:30 CET on Tuesday (2/1).
Several young talents have been included in the squad for the training camp, including Vitalie Becker and Max Grüger (both U19s) as well as Niklas Castelle, Jimmy Kaparos and Steven van der Sloot (all U23s). The quintet have received the opportunity to showcase their talent in first-team training for over a week.
The players who were unable to partake in the final game of the first half of the season against SpVgg Greuther Fürth and beforehand due to injury are part of the travel party.
Some of these players are set to be reintroduced to team training in Albufeira, whilst others will continue their recovery programmes alongside the team. However, this isn’t the case for Sebastian Polter. The striker, who underwent a groin operation following matchday 16, is once again with his doctor. Then it will be decided whether the 32-year-old will follow the squad to Portugal.
Ibrahima Cissé (training individually in Gelsenkirchen in order to be able to hold discussions on a potential move) and Niklas Tauer (in advanced talks with another club) are also not present.
Two friendlies are planned for the team’s stay in Albufeira. FC Schalke 04 will release information on match days, venues and opponents shortly.
