Day three in Herzlake: A comeback after 287 days out

Benjamin Stambouli is back. The defender celebrated his comeback on Sunday (August 9th) during the 5-1 friendly win against VfL Osnabrück. It was a first appearance in 287 days for the Frenchman, who extended his contract until 2023 just a few days ago. The defender was forced to spend months on the sidelines after injuring his foot during the derby last October.

Stambouli looked overjoyed to be back out on the pitch. The 29-year-old started the match and played with great commitment whilst communicating well with his teammates, earning a breather after 45 minutes. As planned, David Wagner changed the entire XI at half-time.

I am very happy to be back.

“I am very happy to be back,” said Stambouli after the final whistle. “The last ten months haven’t been easy for me, and so I have to thank the doctors, physios, and coaching staff, as well as many others who worked with me. They all helped me on my way back.”

Harit and Serdar also return

Amine Harit and Suat Serdar also celebrated their returns alongside Stambouli. The midfield duo were unable to feature in the last few games of 2019/20 due to injuries. The quartet of Ralf Fährmann, Mark Uth, Steven Skrzybski and Sebastian Rudy were also seen in Schalke colours once again, following the conclusion of their various loan spells away from the club.
