Omar Mascarell: Happy and Proud

Omar Mascarell had an impressive Hinrunde. After breaking into the starting XI at the back end of last season, he has remained a key player at the club, and, a few days ago, was named as Schalke’s captain. “I am really happy about it,” he said.

The 26-six-year old succeeded Alexander Nübel, who, after discussions with David Wagner, stepped down from the role after the announcement of his decision to join Bayern Munich in summer. Macarell said that he spoke to the Schalke goalkeeper shortly after the decision was made. “Alex doesn’t have a problem with the fact that I’m the captain now. He’s helping me and will keep on giving everything for the team”, explained Schalke’s number six.

I want to thank the head coach for trusting me with this role.

“I am really happy to be able to lead our team out on the pitch and want to thank the head coach for trusting me with this role,” said Mascarell, who’s undergone impressive development in recent months. “Last season wasn’t easy for me. In that regard, it’s been a much better season so far, for the team and for me personally. I’m hungry for more.”

Mascarell is also very switched on outside of football. The Spaniard is taking multiple German classes throughout the week and does interviews in German.
