Thomas Reis: The fans have carried on where they left off last season

Loud rounds of applause greeted the Royal Blues on Saturday, as the fans welcomed them to the start of their first day at the training camp in Mittersill. Following the opening session, which started in bright sunshine and ended in the rain, head coach Thomas Reis spoke to the media about the upcoming week at the Hohe Tauern National Park and Holiday Region, the travelling support, possible new signings and goals for the season.

Thomas Reis on…

… Key objectives of the camp in Mittersill:

We want to take another step forwards in terms of fitness, but also improve the lads as footballers and play better in general. We’ve played two friendlies in the last few days. I know that those games are always looked at with a critical eye, but for me, friendlies are there to test and gain impressions of things; to look at which players can play in what positions and what formation we can make use of. We want to continue that in our training cam friendlies against FC Copenhagen and Gornik Zabrze.

… The travelling fans:

The fans have carried on where they left off last season. It’s incredible to see how many Schalke fans are already here on the first day of the training camp – I’ve even heard that more will be coming over the course of the week. For many of the fans, joining the team on the trip to Mittersill has become a bit of a tradition. For me, though, it’s my first time here, and it’s wonderful to feel this support.

It’s wonderful to feel this support!

Thomas Reis

… Potential new signings:

André Hechelmann and I are talking about things on a daily basis. We still want to strengthen in a few key positions, but what’s most important is that it all fits together at the end of the day.

…. The role of S04 in the Bundesliga 2:

I’ve emphasised many a time that, as FC Schalke 04, we can’t just wait around and see what happens. We want to return to the Bundesliga – that’s the league this club belongs in. To achieve that aim, we have to give our all in every game, from the first second to the last. I told the team, there will no be easy opponents. Everybody will have the aim to win against us.
