Karel Geraerts: This simply cannot keep on happening
Head coach Karel Geraerts was disappointed after another away defeat for his side on Sunday afternoon (17/3). Hertha boss Pal Dardai was naturally pleased with the victory, even if he was frustrated with the two goals his side conceded. Simon Terodde also gave his thoughts on the 5-2 defeat.
Karel Geraerts:
It was yet another poor performance away from home by us. This simply cannot keep on happening. I don’t just mean the result, but also the team’s performance. Hertha definitely deserved the win. The first half was chaotic with lots of shots by both sides and five goals scored. Both teams defended poorly and we continued like this after the break. It was then always going to be tough to beat a side like Hertha BSC, who punished every mistake we made. I would like to apologise to every Schalke fan for this performance. They once again travelled hundreds of miles to support us. I can understand why they are extremely disappointed.
Pal Dardai:
We knew that we would need to score at least three goals to win today. In the end, we scored five. I don’t want to talk about their two goals, it’s been a trend for us throughout the whole season. I told my players at half time that they should defend from the front, just as we had done so in training during the week. We showed that we’re good at counter-attacking in the second half. Our structure was really good, as was our short passing. I would like to praise my whole team, they put in a great performance for the home fans.
Simon Terodde:
This defeat hurts. The goals we conceded were once again really soft, particularly the ones in the first half. We defended them badly as a team. Although we came back to equalise twice, we couldn’t keep ourselves in the game in the second half and instead conceded two more goals and allowed them far too many chances overall. Not picking up a single point away from home in 2024 is not good enough. We need to ensure that our away games are not over by the 70th or 80th minute. I feel sorry for our fans. I can totally understand why they are disappointed. It’s important that we keep our heads up and recover from this defeat. We’ve got an important home game coming up after the international break. We need to be fully ready for that.
