Kenan Karaman named 2. Bundesliga Player of the Season
Kenan Karaman has been recognised with a special individual award. The forward was named Player of the Season by DFL managing directors Dr Marc Lenz and Dr Steffen Merkel on Sunday (17/5) after the home game against Eintracht Braunschweig.
The S04 captain beat teammate Loris Karius in the final round of the fan vote, which took place in the official DFL app and was open to supporters of all clubs.
Karaman has recorded the most goal involvements for Schalke for the third season in a row and played a major role in the Royal Blues winning the title and securing promotion. He scored 14 goals in 32 appearances and set up a further seven for his teammates. As captain, he also led from the front throughout the campaign.
Karaman and Karius were two of the 16 players shortlisted by the DFL for the individual award. After three voting rounds, with one player eliminated in each head-to-head tie, the final came down to the S04 captain and the Royal Blues’ goalkeeper.
Soufiane El-Faouzi, the third Schalke player nominated by the DFL, also came close to reaching the final, but was beaten by Karaman in the last four. Karius, meanwhile, got the better of Hertha BSC’s Fabian Reese.
