Nikola Katic: I’m working hard every day
Nikola Katic is continuing to work his way back from injury. The centre-back completed an extensive individual session with rehab coach Marc Thum at FC Schalke 04’s training ground on Thursday (30/4). “I’m working hard every day to get back out on the pitch as soon as possible,” commented the defender, who suffered a knee injury while playing for Bosnia and Herzegovina against Italy in World Cup qualifying on 31st March.
The 29-year-old is focused and optimistic. In his own words, he is “well on track” in his recovery. For him, only one thing matters right now: “Getting a little bit closer to my return every day. I’m in a really good place with it.”
Katic naturally has his sights set on playing at the World Cup. Bosnia and Herzegovina will face Canada, Switzerland and Qatar in the group stage of the tournament in North America. He has not completely ruled out featuring for S04 again before the season is over either, but Katic is clear: “This isn’t about me right now. It’s about the team.”
Schalke’s passionate performance in Paderborn recently showed just how much he remains part of the group. He was at the Home Deluxe Arena alongside his compatriot Edin Džeko for the 3-2 away win, willing his teammates on from the touchline.
I’m getting a little bit closer to my return every day.
He was close to the action for the 2-1 win in Elversberg too – not at the stadium, but right in the middle of the dressing room. His teammates facetimed him after the final whistle so he could join in the celebrations straight away. It was a gesture that visibly meant a lot to Katic and, for him, showed just how strong the bond within the squad is.
Watching on is still tough for him, though. “You want to be out on the pitch, you want to help – but you can’t,” said Katic. That makes it all the more pleasing for him to see the team flying at the moment, with 12 points from the last four games and real belief running through the group. “I’m very happy when I see how well things are going for the lads. There’s a really good spirit in the group.”
