Paul Seguin: We’re happy with the performance, but not with the result
After falling to four consecutive away defeats, FC Schalke 04 picked up their first away point since returning from the winter break on Sunday (7/4). The Royal Blues put in an impressive performance in their clash with Hannover 96 and will feel as though they deserved to get more than a draw from the match. “We’re happy with our performance, but not with the result after the way the game went,” explained Paul Seguin.
“We put in a big shift and showed a different side to our game compared to our past few away matches,” continued Schalke’s number 7. The midfielder played an unfortunate role in the home side’s equaliser – as the 29-year-old put a last-ditch tackle in on Cedric Teuchert, the ball deflected off his foot and into the back of his own net. “The fact that the ball came off my boot like that was really unlucky,” stated Seguin. “But that’s just how football is sometimes. I wanted to clear the ball away and I mistimed it. I feel bad for the team and for the fans.”
I stood in front of the crowd with Keke after the final whistle. We both had goosebumps.
His teammates and head coach did not put the blame on Seguin for the goal, however. Karel Geraerts noted that a throw-in shouldn’t have brought about a situation like that in the first place. That being said, he thought that the Royal Blues did a lot of things right on Sunday, as did Seguin. “We kept things simple. We were strong in the tackle and defended as a unit. I’m pleased with our performance, even though I’m annoyed that we missed the chance to pick up three points.”
Seguin was floored by the travelling fans’ support. “I stood in front of the crowd with Keke after the final whistle. We both had goosebumps. It’s incredible to see what our fans can do,” said Seguin. Schalke will be hoping to replicate this performance, but with a different outcome, when they take on 1. FC Nürnberg at the VELTINS-Arena this Saturday (13/4).
