Alessandro Schöpf: We needed to get a second goal

Despite taking the lead, the Royal Blues only drew 1-1 with SC Paderborn 07 on Saturday (8/2). S04 struggled in the final third, particularly in the first half. has summarised the post-match reactions.

David Wagner:

It was a difficult game as we’d expected. The first-half performance wasn’t particularly great, especially our decision making. We made it difficult for ourselves. We weren’t determined enough. We improved after half time and ran off the tiredness in our legs. We gave everything, took the lead and then had chances to score more goals, which, unfortunately, we didn’t manage. We’re disappointed that we didn’t win the game. We will search for solutions to our problems and go again. Congratulations to Paderborn and Steffen on the point they took today.

Steffen Baumgart:

We’re pleased to take a point from today’s game. We played really well in the first half. We could have worked things better in front of goal on a few occasions and then created better opportunities for ourselves. Schalke put us under more pressure in the second half, but we carried on and still had chances that were continuously saved by Alex Nübel. We’re happy with our display today.

Bastian Oczipka:

We’re disappointed because we had hoped for more today and absolutely wanted to win this game. It was already a given that this was going to be a scrappy game. Paderborn have a good team, who you have seen play in other games. We let our concentration slip and didn’t do enough on improving our last pass in the final third.

Alessandro Schöpf:

Whenever we take a 1-0 lead at home, then we can’t be playing for a draw. We should have added the second goal and we needed it today. In my opinion the player clearly hit me on the foot so it was a clear penalty. It’s crazy to me that you can’t blow the whistle in this situation. There was also a second ball on the pitch, and the referee thought that it wasn’t enough for VAR to give a penalty. I can’t see it, but nevertheless we must accept it. Overall the result is okay, and Paderborn deserved the point.

RB Leipzig: Lurking in second

After four competitive games without a win, RB Leipzig put the bad run behind them with a 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen last weekend.
