David Wagner: An amazing night and a great game

After the match, both coaches could agree on one thing: the Royal Blues had picked up a well-deserved 2-0 victory over the Foals. schalke04.de has all the post-match reaction from David Wagner and Gladbach head coach Marco Rose, as well as from goalscorers Suat Serdar and Michael Gregoritsch.

David Wagner:

The boys did a fantastic job. There’s no doubt that our fans witnessed an incredible game! After a four-week-long break, it’s always difficult to say where you’re at. That was the case for us, just as it was for Borussia. Naturally, we said before the game that we wanted to win. However, the manner in which we won was just as important to me. That’s why I’m extremely pleased with both the result, and the manner in which we achieved it. We brought our game to the pitch and defended well against Gladbach. It’s dangerous to allow a team like that too much space.

The atmosphere in the stadium was incredible. We never let up, and neither did the support. In the end, it was a very successful night. The fact that Gregerl scored immediately is fantastic. It could not have been a better start for our newest signing. Aside from his goal, he also played a fantastic game, same as the rest of the team.

We will now enjoy the rest of the weekend and will take the time to recover from tonight’s match. We will then begin our preparations for our upcoming game against Bayern München.

Marco Rose:

Congratulations to David Wagner. It was a deserved win for Schalke. Our opponents were stronger than us in multiple areas: Schalke ran more, sprinted more, and won more tackles. Those were the difference-makers. Schalke were the better side overall, but we were lacking belief in some areas. Some of our decision-making needed work. In the first moments of the second half we went 2-0 down, so I think that the loss came as a result of a good tactical switch from Schalke.

Suat Serdar:

I’m happy that we’ve started the year with a win against a strong opponent. I had a lot of space on my goal. The pass from Gregerl was super, and I had a lot of room to think about what to do. I looked at what the defender was doing and then tried to place it in the far corner. Luckily, it worked out. Overall, it was a strong team effort. We entered into the challenges and the fans helped push us on.

Michael Gregoritsch:

It was a perfect night for me. First game, first win, first goal. I’d rather not share what went through my mind after I missed my first chance. I could have scored then. But, it was part of my plan to score in front of the Nordkurve during the second half (laughs). It was definitely an amazing feeling to score in front of that stand.
