David Wagner: A clear defeat

There were no two ways about it. Bayern fully deserved to beat Schalke on Saturday night. David Wagner and Hansi Flick reflected on FCB’s win, while Bastian Oczipka and Daniel Caligiuri looked back on the heaviest defeat of the season.

David Wagner:

You need several things to go for you if you want to win in Munich. Today none of those things happened. It was a clear and deserved defeat. We didn’t play like we wanted to. Bayern were very impressive and a lot better than us. We’ve said recently that we’re still developing as a side after winning games, so we can still say that after today. We will regroup and improve for the next game against Hertha.

Hansi Flick:

The team did exactly what we wanted them to. We didn’t give Schalke any room to breathe and played with a higher intensity. So I’m really happy. We wanted to demonstrate our philosophy. The fact that Leipzig dropped points before we kicked off wasn’t important to me. The important thing is that got the three points. Two games, six points, nine goals; a good start to the New Year. We want to five it our all right up until the end of the season; everyone knows there’s still a long way to go.

Bastian Oczipka:

We had high expectations after the win over Gladbach. We played poorly and didn’t show what we’re capable of. We’ve worked well as a team in lots of games this season, but didn’t today. We were missing a lot of qualities that have defined us recently. We will have to get over this defeat quickly, even if it will be difficult. Our full focus will have to turn to the Hertha game from tomorrow.

Daniel Caligiuri:

Conceding five is really tough. Lots of things went wrong today. We wanted to start well and see how the game developed, but unfortunately, Bayern showed their high quality very quickly. We were altogether too passive, and that wasn’t good enough from us. Now we have to just tick this game off and move on quickly instead of dwelling on it. We’ve played well in many games this year, but just not today. After we conceded the third goal, it was like we weren’t even on the pitch.
