We didn’t perform well as a group and Bayern were in great shape. We need to shake this off now. We have to show a reaction against Werder – we expect that from ourselves. We were too naïve after conceding the fourth goal. We need to make sure that we carry on until the end. We wanted to create moments of danger, which we did. You have to take your chances if you want to cause Bayern problems. In comparison to Bayern, we didn’t do that in the opening 15 minutes, and the game then got away from us. It was the most difficult game of the season for us. I have confidence in my team’s qualities, which we unfortunately couldn’t show today.

Hansi Flick:

After taking a clear lead, we really wanted to keep the clean sheet. It was important for me that the team did things properly for the whole 90 minutes. Leroy Sané fitted into the game really well. We showed that we have great pace in attack. I’m happy that we could produce such a good performance on the pitch today. We wanted to put the opposition under pressure when they had the ball and not give them much time. Then, when we were in possession, let them do all the running.

Bastian Oczipka:

We knew it would be really tough against the treble winners before the game, but a result like this isn’t acceptable. It’s sh** – there’s no other way to describe it. An 8-0 defeat is a really disappointing way to start the season. Bayern ran rings around us today. I’m struggling to put it into words so soon after the game. I’m obviously so disappointed. The coach said straight after the game that we need to look ahead. We’ve got Bremen next week and we can’t play like this.
