Guido Burgstaller: The equaliser was really frustrating

David Wagner and Alfred Schreuder both reflected on Saturday’s 1-1 draw in the VELTINS-Arena in the post-match press conference. Alongside both managers, schalke04.de has also summarised the thoughts of Guido Burgstaller and Bastian Oczipka.

Guido Burgstaller

David Wagner:

Today was a game between two out-of-form sides, but we were the better team, as we had more clear-cut chances. We deserved to be 1-0 up half time. They barely managed to create anything from open play, which makes the fact that we conceded from a set piece even more frustrating. I’m pleased with how the lads played with our new system. We’re learnt a lot after our injuries in the past few weeks, which isn’t easy to do in our situation.

Alfred Schreuder:

We can be happy with the draw. I think 1-1 was a fair scoreline. The first half belonged to Schalke, the second to us. We wanted to open up a bit more in the second half, which we did well. We were a bit shaky in the first period. Ultimately, my team are humans, not robots.

Guido Burgstaller:

We played well in the first half especially. We deserved to be ahead at the break, and could maybe have scored another one in the first 45 minutes. It’s extremely frustrating to concede from what felt like their first shot on goal. We’d also had chances to go 2-0 up just before that as well. There’s no point thinking about those missed chances now. We’ve taken a point after three consecutive defeats and will now give our all in the derby. We have some good memories from our last games there, which will give us confidence.

Bastian Oczipka:

We are very disappointed because we played and defended very well. Hoffenheim were not very dangerous, so it’s pretty annoying for us to concede the equaliser from a set piece. At that point, we weren’t able to clear the ball fast enough. We have to be able to clear the ball better in situations like this.
