Weston McKennie: I drive to the training ground in a good mood every day

From left-back to right-wing, Weston McKennie has played all over the pitch for Schalke. At the moment, though, the 21-year-old is only able to take on the role of spectator. “I miss being out on the pitch,” says the all-rounder, who suffered a shoulder injury just over a month ago playing against Eintracht Frankfurt.

His recovery is going to plan at least. “My shoulder is getting better every day,” confirms the US international, who was able to take part in team training sessions at the training camp in Fuente Alamo. He did, however, have to avoid making tackles. “I hope I can play again soon,” he continues. If everything continues to go well, Mckennie should make the squad for one of the two upcoming games against Hertha BSC.

It’s fair to say that Mckennie can hardly wait to make his return. “It’s an indescribable feeling when you run out in front of 60,000 fans,” he enthuses. Recently, he has been one of those fans in the VELTINS-Arena and he liked what he saw against Mönchengladbach. “The boys played a great game. It was fun to watch. But it’s more fun when you get to play yourself.”

Mckennie is happy to part of a team that gets on well off the pitch, too: “We have a fantastic team. I drive to the training ground in a good mood every day and I look forward to seeing my teammates!”
