FC Schalke 04 beat Holstein Kiel 3-0 away from home on Sunday afternoon (1/8). Simon Terodde scored twice, both from Thomas Ouwejan free-kicks, and Marius Bülter sealed the win in the second half.

Dominick Drexler: Only focused on winning the game

Dominick Drexler’s perfectly-timed tackle kick-started the counter-attack that led to Simon Terodde’s opening goal in the season opener against Hamburger SV. The midfielder was subbed off to a round of applause in the 73rd minute of his competitive debut for Schalke. Now, Drexler is looking to pick up his first points of the campaign against his former side, Holstein Kiel.

Martin Fraisl: I was impressed by their togetherness

Martin Fraisl has been part of the FC Schalke 04 goalkeeping trio for exactly one week now. The 28-year-old Austrian made his debut between the sticks for Royal Blue during Tuesday’s 7-0 friendly win against SSVg Velbert. The keeper now wants to work hard to play an important role in a successful season for the club.

Marcin Kaminski: Really wanted to be part of the new team

Schalke’s new number 35 is Marcin Kaminski. The centre-back joined the Royal Blues from VfB Stuttgart and is now following in the footsteps of some prominent predecessors from his homeland, Poland, and in his position: Tomasz Hajto and Tomasz Waldoch. This duo was part of a Schalke team that won two DFB-Pokals at the start of the century. The 29-year-old has already been in touch with his compatriots.

Terodde: We had it in our hands

The Royal Blues started strongly against Hamburg and the Veltins-Arena was alive after 30 minutes, owing to a goal from new man Simon Terodde in the 7th minute and a Michael Langer penalty save in the 28th. Come full time, however, Terodde and co. were made to do with a defeat to kick off the season, which frustrated the attacker especially. One moment of the game stuck out to him in particular.

3-1 defeat to HSV to start the season

FC Schalke 04 lost 3-1 at home to Hamburger SV on matchday 1 of the 2021/22 season. 19,770 fans attended the game at the VELTINS-Arena. Simon Terodde put the Royal Blues ahead after eight minutes against his former side, however Robert Glatzel (53’), Moritz Heyer (86’) and Bakery Jatta (90’) all scored in the second half to give HSV the three points.

Dimitrios Grammozis: We’re really up for it

FC Schalke 04 will begin their new league season with a home game against Hamburger SV on Friday (23/7, 20:30 CEST). “We’ve all been waiting for this moment for almost six weeks of pre-season”, said Dimitrios Grammozis, who is also looking forward to the return of a crowd. “We can finally play in front of our fans at the VELTINS-Arena again.”

Matchdays 3-8 scheduled

A week after the DFL announced when the first two matchdays will be played, they have now published the exact dates and times for matchdays 3-8. FC Schalke 04 will play twice on a Friday, three times on a Saturday and once on a Sunday during this period.

DFL schedules the first two matchdays of the new season

The DFL announced the kick-off times for the first two matchdays on Wednesday (30/6). FC Schalke 04’s first game against Hamburger SV, the opening fixture for the 2021/22 2. Bundesliga season, was already scheduled for 23rd July at 20:30 CEST. The Royal Blues will then travel to Kiel a week later on a Sunday.

FC Schalke 04’s first game of 2021/22 will be at home to Hamburger SV, which will kick off the 2. Bundesliga season. The game will take place at 20:30 CEST on Friday, 23rd July at the VELTINS-Arena.
