Miron Muslic: It’s a privilege to welcome Real Madrid
FC Schalke 04 welcome Real Madrid CF to the VELTINS-Arena on Sunday (16/8) at 17:00 CEST for their final friendly before the start of the competitive season. The game against the Spanish heavyweights will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Royal Blues’ home. Head coach Miron Muslic is looking forward to a special occasion in front of more than 60,000 supporters. “It’s a privilege for us to welcome Real Madrid to the VELTINS-Arena for this anniversary match.”
With the season just around the corner, the meeting with the Champions League’s record winners will provide Schalke with another valuable test. “There’s so much we can learn from games like these. That was already the case against Atalanta,” said Miron Muslic. The challenge is likely to be even greater against Real Madrid. “Real obviously have even more quality, and it’s also their last friendly before they begin their La Liga campaign.”
The same is true for the Royal Blues, with their seventh and final pre-season friendly followed by a trip to Hallescher FC in the first round of the DFB-Pokal a week on Monday (24/8). Muslic therefore already has one eye on the competitive opener. “Of course, we’re already thinking about our DFB-Pokal game in Halle. We’ll have to be ready for that. One thing is clear: Halle is the more important game.”

At the same time, the 43-year-old stressed that his side are “looking forward to the special challenge of testing ourselves against one of the best teams in Europe and one of the biggest names in world football at the Arena on Sunday.”
As well as boasting outstanding individual quality in a squad featuring the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham, Real Madrid also have one of the game’s most distinguished figures in the dugout this season. José Mourinho, one of the most decorated coaches of the past two decades, is now in charge of the Spanish side. “I’m looking forward to meeting him,” said Muslic. “He’s a great coach who has had an absolutely fantastic career.”
