Remmert brace not enough – Schalke edged out 3-2 by Wiesbaden

A narrow defeat in the first friendly of the day: FC Schalke 04 were beaten 3-2 by SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday morning (12/07) at the training ground in Neustift. Both goals for the Royal Blues came from Peter Remmert (71’, 87’).

Miron Muslic lined up his side in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with nine of the eleven starters playing the full 90 minutes. It was the first outing of pre-season for Taylan Bulut, who came on in the 62nd minute. The Germany U19 international only joined the training camp in Neustift after competing at the U19 European Championship and enjoying a short break. Henning Matriciani wore the captain’s armband.

SV Wehen Wiesbaden made a bright start to the game and threatened Schalke’s penalty area several times in the opening minutes. Fatih Kaya, the third-division side’s top scorer last season with 20 goals, opened the scoring after seven minutes. Following a low cross from Tarik Gözüsirin on the right, Kaya was perfectly placed at the far post to turn the ball in from close range. Less than three minutes later, the same player doubled the lead – this time finishing from close range after an assist from the left.

Schalke nearly produced an immediate response. Anton Donkor broke down the left and cut the ball back for Peter Remmert, whose shot from five metres hit the inside of the post (11′). The striker had another good chance in the 18th minute, but his header from another Donkor cross went over the bar.

Now in the game, Schalke created their next chance through Pape Meïssa Ba. However, the forward’s shot from 12 yards lacked precision and went just over. After their second goal, the opposition – who much like the Royal Blues didn’t shy away from any challenges – created few attacking threats for the remainder of the half.

Defensively, the third-division side held firm until the break, thanks in part to Florian Stritzel. The goalkeeper reacted well in the 38th minute to deny Mauro Zalazar, who had won the ball from Gözüsirin just outside the box and fired off a shot. Moments later, Amin Younes had a chance following a cross from Ba and a poor clearance from SVWW, but his effort was blocked – as was the follow-up attempt from Peter Remmert.

SV Wehen Wiesbaden head coach Nils Döring made a full set of changes at half-time, sending out eleven fresh players for the second half. Schalke boss Miron Muslic made just one switch, bringing on Johannes Siebeking in goal – the youngster having featured for the U19s last season.

But like Luca Podlech in the first half, Siebeking was quickly picking the ball out of his net. After winning possession in midfield, Wiesbaden broke quickly. A low cross from the left found Robin Kalem, who tapped in from six yards to make it 3-0 in the 52nd minute. Henning Matriciani, meanwhile, was denied a goal of his own – his header from an Amin Younes free-kick in the 63rd minute was well saved by Florian Stritzel.

Shortly after, the 800 or so Schalke fans in the stands finally had something to cheer. Peter Remmert burst down the left after being picked out by Anton Donkor, drove into the box and fired confidently into the near corner (71’). Moritz Flotho came close to restoring Wiesbaden’s two-goal cushion just two minutes later, but his header from a left-wing cross went just wide of the post.

Peter Remmert was more clinical in the closing stages. After a corner from Taylan Bulut – who had come on just after the hour mark – the striker rose highest and headed the ball into the far corner to make it 3-2 (87’). Schalke pushed for an equaliser in the final three minutes, but the comeback ultimately fell short.
