André Hechelmann: An important factor in our decision

Sporting director André Hechelmann revealed that he felt Karel Geraerts was exactly the kind of coach the club wanted as soon as he met him. “Our conversations were extremely positive straight away. We were immediately on the same page, both as people and when it comes to football. We could sense the huge amount of energy Karel has, as well as the fact that he is extremely excited for this challenge,” said Hechelmann, who, together with Peter Knäbel, spoke to the Belgian for five hours the first time they met one another.

Hechelmann told the media on Monday that Knäbel and himself looked each other in the eyes before their journey home and both felt that Geraerts was the right man for the job. “Karel was fully prepared, presented us with some analysis and showed how he likes to play football. He’s got a clear style of play, likes to play at a high intensity, is target-orientated and efficient. We’ve found a coach that will provide our team with some new ideas and one that is excited to put these into practice. I’m therefore pleased that we are now working together.”

Hechelmann believes the new coach can develop both players and a team. “He showed he can do that at Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and that was an important factor in our decision,” stated the sporting director, who has been impressed by the Belgian side’s recent success story.

The S04 sporting director reported that the club are currently working on bringing in a new assistant coach. “Karel will receive all the support he needs from us to put his ideas into practice.”
