André Hechelmann to leave FC Schalke 04 with immediate effect

Following open and honest discussions, FC Schalke 04’s executive board and André Hechelmann have agreed to part ways, in a decision shared on Wednesday (6/3). The 39-year-old will leave his position as technical director with immediate effect, with his duties set to be shared amongst the club’s governing body for the time being.

André Hechelmann: An important factor in our decision

Sporting director André Hechelmann revealed that he felt Karel Geraerts was exactly the kind of coach the club wanted as soon as he met him. “Our conversations were extremely positive straight away. We were immediately on the same page, both as people and when it comes to football. We could sense the huge amount of energy Karel has, as well as the fact that he is extremely excited for this challenge,” said Hechelmann, who, together with Peter Knäbel, spoke to the Belgian for five hours the first time they met one another.

Until the very end, everyone involved did everything they could to work together with Thomas Reis to help the club find a way out of the bad patch. “However, following the internal discussions held over the past few days, we weren’t confident that the setup that we had was capable of getting us out of the downward spiral and of being successful in the short and medium term. André Hechelmann: We've got down to work straight away

At his official presentation at the VELTINS-Arena on Friday (2nd June), Hechelmann was pleased to confirm that Simon Terodde was going to stay at S04. Even before this, he was involved in extending both Marcin Kaminski’s and Henning Matriciani’s contracts.
