André Hechelmann: Time to turn things around

Until the very end, everyone involved did everything they could to work together with Thomas Reis to help the club find a way out of the bad patch. “However, following the internal discussions held over the past few days, we weren’t confident that the setup that we had was capable of getting us out of the downward spiral and of being successful in the short and medium term. That’s why we came to the conclusion that we had to make a change.” explained André Hechelmann.

You have to take action when you no longer have full confidence and “it’s our duty to do just that”, said the sporting director. The 39-year-old stressed his gratitude to Thomas Reis and to his assistant Markus Gellhaus for their hard work, which he also emphasised personally to the pair in private.

A fresh start brings new opportunities

Schalke will now begin a new chapter. “Changes always bring about new chances, new opportunities and new approaches,” explained Hechelmann. “We’ve got confidence in our squad and we know that it has potential. Now, we’ve just got to realise that potential, which is a task for everyone. Above all, the team has got to show what it’s capable of achieving.”

Matthias Kreutzer has shown that he can manage challenging situations very well in the past.

The team will be under the direction of Matthias Kreutzer for the time being, who has “a clear footballing vision, which he passes on to the team. He has shown that he can manage challenging situations very well in the past. Together with the experienced Mike Büskens, we are convinced that Matthias can help turn the tide,” emphasised the sporting director. “We’ve got two absolutely crucial games ahead of us,” he stated in view of Friday’s clash against SC Paderborn 07 and the home fixture against Hertha BSC on the following Sunday.

It is up to the new coach to find the best possible solution. “It’s a big challenge to take up such an important position at a club,” said the 39-year-old. But he’s not just sitting in front of a blank sheet of paper, because “we’re always required to have ideas in our heads.”
